£3,000 - £5,000
A fine atmospheric oil on canvas entitled "Chaseing (sic) The Armada Up Channel" by Montague Dawson, April 1909, and numbered 65. The centre left displays an English flagship, bearing the Royal Standard and Tudor pennant of St George with the green/blue streamer, engages a Spanish flagship with a broadside, both main sails bear the results of cannon fire, and both ships show archers engaged in the fighting tops, whilst an English cutter and other large warships are in attendance. A break in the clouds above opens up the view to give a brighter outlook from the storm clouds and smoke swirling around, a small section of wreckage occupies the lower left foreground. The canvas, 34" x 24½" approx, (a small repair (approx 5") to canvas through cutter), the frame approx 38" x 28" shows minor wear particularly at the corners. Montague Dawson, (died 1973) followed his father and grandfather into Marine Art, this original piece, dated 1909, is one of his earlier works and predates the popular clipper ships and racing yachts for which he is more readily known. £3000-5000
