The basic Mercedes R129 model was the 190 bhp 2.8 L inline 6 280 SL with 12 valves. The 228 hp 3.0 L in-line 6 with 24 valves is known as the 300SL 24v. But it was the 322 hp 500SL, with a 5.0 L V8 engine, which made the most headlines. The specification was high, with electric windows, mirrors, seats and roof. The R129 model was the first convertible/roadster to offer the automatic roll-bar deployment in event of rollover. The driver can also manually raise and lower the roll-bar should he choose to. This facilitates the clean look of R129 without compromising the occupant's safety.
This Mercedes SL 320 is a Limited Edition model and a one owner car since 1998. It was a dealer registered car initially with a change of name (same family) in 2001. It is totally original but has had small amounts of remedial paintwork done over the years, but it is difficult to tell where. There is a Full Service History with all Mercedes dealer stamps for the first 10 years. Thereafter, it was maintained by the owners own garage on a Scottish island where the miles covered for the next 12 years were notably low by average. It comes with the owner's handbook pack which includes the service history, the V5 and current MoT.
The car is in excellent condition throughout with no mechanical issues. It is sitting on good tyres and drives nicely with no issues. The bodywork and paintwork are unblemished and in really excellent condition.The car benefits from having the additional optional extra of a removable hard top. The only bad point on the car is the canvas hood, the rear part is showing signs of wear and deterioration. Hoods come in 2 parts and are still available from the dealer.
The vendor will be driving the car to the sale from Scotland.
