Ferdinand Lucas Bauer (1760-1826) - View of Lincoln from Canwick, signed (Fer. Bauer: del) on fragment of the original mount verso, pen, ink and wash, en grisaille, 28.5 x 47cm, unframed

Provenance: Collection of Sir Geoffrey Harmsworth Bt. FSA (1904-1980)

Presumably executed for Bauer's patron, John Sibthorp, author of Floral Gracea and depicting the view of Lincoln from Sibthorp's seat, Canwick Hall. Bauer illustrated Sibthorp's Flora Gracea, but also executed topographical drawings for him, in Greece and subsequently in England. The present drawing must predate 1806 as in that year the two spires were removed from Lincoln Cathedral's West Towers
