Henry Constantine Richter (1821-1902) British. White Breasted Water Hen (Gallinula Phoenicura Amaurornis Phoenicurus), Pencil and Watercolour heightened with body colour and gum Arabic, Numbered ‘7.67.a.’ in Pencil, 14.25” x 24.25” (36.2 x 54cm). Literature: J. Gould, op.cit., VII, pl.67. Gould observed these water hens at the Zoological Gardens, Regent’s Park. He made notes from life of their colouring, particularly the brownish red irises of the eyes and wax-yellow legs, but the illustration was made from his specimens. In India the waterhen, like the European Moorhen, is common through the year frequenting small ponds and swamps near villages.
