19th Century Continental School
Portrait of a Belgian Army Officer, 1838, O.O.C., in gilt frame, 100cms x 75cms (39" x 30"), initialled 'M. G' or 'M J' and dated 1838.
Provenance: Private collection, Belgium.
Coutau-Bégarie & Associés, Paris, June 2017.
Wearing a dark blue tunic, with plastron front, red piping and braid, a young officer stands beside a cannon, his right arm resting on the barrel. The officer may be an army regular, or a member of the "Garde Civique", a militia raised in early nineteenth-century Belgium. Members of the Garde Civique typically wore blue uniforms with red piping. The red cord dangling from the officer's collar suggests a role in artillery. The setting is outdoor, with blue skies and a red tinge on the horizon.
