the 24in. carved and painted hull with grab ropes, RNLI logo to bow, with detailed fittings including furled sails, masts, set of oars, painted fittings as appropriate and lifebuoy, in original glazed wooden case with silver plate inscribed Dedicated to W. N. Rudge Esqr 1865 -- 11½ x 33 x 12in. (29 x 84 x 30.5cm.)
William Newland Rudge was a member of the Royal Thames Yacht Club owning the 21-ton cutter Whisper with which he raced extensively in the Corinthian races. He also won the RTYC Thames Regatta in 1859 in the Corinthian Class. His passion for the sea was reflected through his charitable donations to the RNLI, including a donation of over £700 in 1865, equating to over £88,000 today.
