The 'Darling' of the High Street in the mid-sixties, Chapman’s technologically advanced Elan of 1962 featured a compelling package of revvy twin-cam motor, all-wheel disc brakes, rack and pinion steering and all-round independent suspension. Better in every regard than the Type 14 Elite that it replaced, the glassfibre-bodied sports car with separate backbone chassis is rightly regarded as the best of its breed of any generation.
A big part of that was the engine, a compact, potent and characterful mill that endowed the Elan with the performance to match its nimble chassis (the Elan was the first Lotus with a separate body/backbone chassis). Initial production used the Ford 1500cc motor, soon replaced by the 711 block based Twin Cam engine. Colin Chapman’s relentless pursuit of lightness resulted in a car weighing less than 700 kilos, achieving 60 mph in 7.5 seconds, and delivering a top speed of 120mph. Dial in trendy 1960s paint colours, starring TV and film roles and racing successes, and Lotus delivered the definitive sportscar of the 1960s.
The delightful example we are pleased to offer today is a Series 4 SE (Special Equipment) with a genuine Type 45 body shell and more powerful engine. This Series 4 is a “Black Badge” car, fitted with black bonnet badge and steering wheel central boss containing Chapman's initials, in deference to and memory of Chapman’s friend, the great Jim Clark who was killed driving a Lotus Formula 2 car in 1968.
Subject of an older restoration, the Elan benefits from a replacement galvanized chassis, eliminating any future chassis corrosion concerns. A photographic record supports the restoration, supported by numerous invoices in the supporting history file.
The Elan presents well with good panel gaps, an excellent convertible roof and tonneau, and a very nice interior with all functioning switchgear. The Twin Cam engine starts without fuss and ticks over sweetly, fed by twin Weber 40DCOE carburettors. Finished in Lotus Yellow, this lovely Elan delivers the ideal combination of form and function in a diminutive package.
