Edmund Gosse (1849-1928). Handwritten letter with full signature, to a Professor Richard Meyer, 23 May 1909. Discusses the “double blow” of the recent deaths of “our two most majestic luminaries”, poet Algernon Charles Swinburne (d. 10 April 1909) & novelist George Meredith (d. 18 May 1909). Gosse wrote a biography of Swinburne in 1917 and published his collected letters the following year.
Edmund Gosse was best known in his lifetime as a prominent literary critic & supporter of aspiring literary talent, but is now best remembered as the author of the illuminating cross-generational study, Father and Son. Retains original envelope. Condition - good
