We are pleased to be offering this lot from the stock of family run firm Shipton and Co., who were based in Hastings White Rock area, and who were unfortunately forced to close their doors in 2014 after a section of the rock face above collapsed onto their shop, making the building unsafe. From the same family as citrine and amethyst rock crystal and smokey quartz are clear and grey to brown versions of the same stone. Rock crystal is colourless quartz and has been used throughout history as a gemstone, as an early alternative to glass and diamond, carved into drinking vessels and of course crystal balls. It also has properties which mean it is used for scientific purposes as well such as quartz watch movements. The Greek word krystallos meaning 'ice', provides the basis for the origin of the name rock crystal. For those who believe in the physical healing properties of crystals, rock crystal is thought to stimulate the immune system and clear away toxins, it is also thought to stimulate positive feelings and protect against negative energy.
Smokey quartz is an extremely close relative of citrine as the colour hues range from orangey brown to grey. Found in the Scottish Cairngorm mountains the dark orange version of this stone is referred as a cairngorm in reference to as it's place of origin. As with all stones from the quartz family the smokey quartz is thought to have strong protective and healing powers including warding off nightmares and bringing calmness.
