A BOER WAR DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT GROUP OF EIGHT TO THE ARMY ORDNANCE CORPS. A group of eight comprising an OBE on first type military ribbon, unnamed as issued, an Edward VII Distinguished Conduct Medal named to 1919 S. Q-MR-Serjt E.H.Sidney 10th Coy A.O.C., Queen's South Africa medal with Natal clasp named to 1919 S. Q.M. Sjt E. Sidney A.O.C., King's South Africa Medal with South Africa 1901 and 1902 clasps named to 1919 S. Condr E.H.Sidney A.O.C. 1914-15 Star to Capt E.H.Sidney D.C.M. A.O.C. War Medal and Victory Medals to Major E.H.Sidney and Long Service and Good Conduct Medal named to 1919 S Q.M. Sgt E.Sidney A.O.C.
E.H. Smith was awarded his Distinguished Conduct Medal for service during the Boer War, the award being Gazetted on the 27th September 1901, page 6325.
An Honorary Lieutenant as Assistant Commissariat of Ordnance from 27th August 1910, and Deputy Commissary of Ordinance at Woolwich Arsenal from December 1914.
During the First World War whilst serving with the British Salonika Force he suffered with Malaria being sick for ten days in July of 1917, at this date he was 48 years old and had served for 34 years. He was twice mentioned in dispatches whilst in Salonika, on the 20th July 1917 (Gazette 30196 page 746) and on the 11th June 1920 (page 6456).
With a silver cased compass hallmarked for London,1842, thought to have belonged to the recipient of these medals.
Provenance, a descendant of the recipient. *CR Unmounted, various naming styles. Good condition.
