UK Covers; 1840 (5 June) used example of Southgate's Mulready caricature envelope No.2 (so-called "Ladies' School") addressed to Bury Saint Edmunds, probably from London. Bears indistinct PP park in greenish blue and red circular dated "PAID" mark. Early date.
Various faults - heavy vertical crease, numerous tone spots, ink spots at left, tears on flap at back.
In an auction last year a much nicer example (dated 15 August) sold at £1,400, the description there stating that only fourteen used examples were known. This example previously unrecorded, so now fifteen.
