A fascinating antique etching on white satin titled "The Dispatch Bearers" by W. Edwin Law, after J. L. Meissonier. Features a wonderful inclusion of a 'remarque' or miniature illustration in the bottom left of the work, originally used to increase value and authenticity. Hand signed bottom right and housed in a black frame.
W Edwin Law was a prolific etcher of the early 20th century. Architectural subjects, often in London – Westminster Abbey, is a prime example – were his speciality.
He often inscribed the lower margin of his etchings with the words ‘RA exhibitor’; he is recorded as having exhibited once at the Royal Academy in 1904.
