A group of seven medals, awarded to 2nd Officer John William Barnett, comprising an MBE, 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, Africa Star, Burma Star, War Medal, and a Lloyd's Medal for Meritorious Service, with MBE certificate and with copy of research, The London Gazette of 11/7/44 carried the announcement of the award of the MBE (Civil) to 2nd Officer Barnett, with the citation The ship was discharging cargo, when a fire broke out in one of the magazines which had not been discharged. Fire-fighting operations were immediately begun, but the situation became extremely dangerous & after all but essential crew had been taken off, the vessel was towed out into the bay. Although tugs & lighters took out extra fire-fighting appliances & another ship maneuvered alongside with hoses, the fire rapidly became beyond control & shortly afterwards the vessel blew up. The Second Officer displayed outstanding devotion to duty & coolness throughout, with complete disregard of his own safety, he remained in the ship to fight the fire in exceedingly dangerous circumstances & set an excellent example to all by his courage & determination. 2nd Officer Barnett was also awarded the Lloyd's Medal Meritorious service for the same action
