A LARGE JAPANESE BRONZE CENSER WITH COVER, MEIJI PERIOD
The body supported by stylised beast mask shaped legs on an integrated stand. Body decorated in high relief with birds flying among peonies and rocks, flanked by two Suanni shaped handles, also with a Suanni finial on the cover. Height 42cm, weight 2.5kg.
According to Chinese legend, Suanni is the fifth son of a dragon's nine sons and he likes to smoke while sitting down, hence his images often appear on censers.
