Sailing vessel Avalanche, lost in collision in the Channel 12 miles off Portland Bill, 1877 Two early match boxes Tin boxes with lids, one part rusted away – 7cm x 3.75cm x 2cm – bearing the makers name, Bell & Black, London – the Trade Mark of a bell and type No.4. One end of the box’s holds a ‘sandpaper’ striker, and each box contains some 100 rolled wax match-sticks. Lids once fitted with a hinge, since rusted away.
