An original wartime letter written by Flight Lieutenant Richard Anthony "Tony" Bethell (Prisoner No. 858 to his mother Mrs D. L. Bethell dated 29th September 1944.

Bethell was an escapee from Stalag Luft III (The Great Escape) in March 1944 during WW2, but was re-captured by the Gestapo along with fellow escaper Flight Lieutenant James Leslie Robert Long who was shot as one of the 50 murdered by the Gestapo on the express orders of Adolf Hitler. Bethell was spared and was one of the 23 who were returned to Stalag Luft III.

The letter goes into detail about sports, a 'Band Show' and describes the costumes as well as comments about winter and clothing.
