R.M.S. CARPATHIA/TITANIC/BERENGARIA: Unique and exceptional 'Commodore' sign belonging to Commodore Arthur H. Rostron, rescuer of the Titanic survivors, taken from his personal quarters in the Berengaria and presented to him on his retirement.
Provenance: Ex Henry Aldridge and Son lot 247 October 22nd 2016 and prior from the collection of Captain Rostron's friends, Louis and Augusta Ogden, passengers on the Carpathia during the Titanic rescue, and thence by direct descent. The sign is labelled 'Commodore' in gold lettering and measures 12ins. x 3ins. Rostron wrote in his 1931 autobiography Home From the Sea I found the Berengaria the most comfortable ship I had ever been in… for over four years I had command of this splendid vessel and on August 1st, 1928, I had the honour of being appointed Commodore of the Cunard Fleet. It was the top of my particular ladder and, as I climb down, tuck it away in the garden shed… (p. 21). Rare opportunity to acquire the only tangible evidence of the appointment Rostron considered his highest personal honour, despite the famed award of a Loving Cup, Congressional gold medal, the Legion D'Honneur and scores of other forms of international recognition.
