Star Lot : A fabulous antique Mima Nixon (Irish, b.1861 - d.1939) watercolour on paper painting featuring a coastal landscape scene of a cliffside dwelling rendered in a palette of blue greens, sand and terracotta reds. Signed Nixon bottom right and dated to the 1910s (date is obscured by frame). Housed in gilt frame. Appleton's framer sticker to verso. Nixon is a well known Irish artist whose work has fetched €1000+ at Adam's.

Born in 1861, she was active in Ireland from the 1890s. She exhibited some eighty works with the Watercolour Society of Ireland between 1893-1932. She also exhibited at the Dublin Sketching Society from 1887 of which she was a member and the Belfast Art society and the Royal Hibernian Academy. Her watercolours of Algeria and the low countries and Royal palaces and gardens were exhibited at one-woman shows by the Fine Art Society in 1907 and 1914 respectively. Her work was also exhibited at the Bailiie Gallery in 1909, Wimbledon Art Exhibition in 1910, The Royal Academy, The Society of Women Artists and The London Salon. Her watercolours of flowers were collected in Dutch Bulbs and Gardens, with descriptions by Una Silberrad and Sophie Lyall (Adam & Charles Black, 1916).
