Welsh. 2nd Monmouth Regt Military Cross MC KIA group of four medals. Awarded to Lieutenant William Mandeville Sankey MC who was killed during the German Spring offensive in March 1918. Comprising: Military Cross original ribbon and pin in leather case, 1914/15 Star 2 LIEUT W.M. SANKEY MON R (SMALL STAMPING), British War Medal, Victory Medal LIEUT. Medals loose with a quantity of research. The announcement of the Military Cross appeared in the London Gazette on the 1st January 1917. Lieutenant William Mandeville Sankey MC was born St. Thomas Exmouth and at the outbreak of the war was granted a commission in the Monmouthshire Regiment. Posted to the 1/2nd Bn he landed in France on the 3rd August 1915. On the 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme he was given commanded of the Battalion Bombers and Snipers, He and his men were in the thick of the fighting on this and the following days and it is believed these actions lead to the award of the Military Cross. He is noted as being wounded on two occasions during this period. During the German March Offensive with the 2nd Bn he was mortally wounded on the 22nd March 1918, succumbing to his wounds the following day and buried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery.
