Prussia, Frederick the Great, medal 'Battle of Prague'
Date: 1757
Large circular bronze medal struck for Frederick II the Great of Prussia (1717-1786) to commemorate the Prussian victory over the Austrians at the Battle of Prague on 6 May 1757. This commemorative medal was designed by the renowned Dutch medallist and mint master Johann Georg Holtzhey (1729-1808).
Obverse: Armoured bust of Frederick to right.
Legend: FRIDERICVS MAGN. D.G. REX BORVSS.FL. BRAND. DVX SILES ET.
Reverse: Winged personification of Victory at centre kicking the crown off the head of a kneeling Austrian Empress Maria Theresia with lightning bolts extending over kneeling Empress Maria Theresia of Austria with tumbling crown. Shield with inscription 'VICTORIA FRIDERI / CI MAGN. ALBISIL and MOLDA on spolia.
