A PAIR OF TUDOR CHILDREN'S LEATHER SHOES

18cm long; together with a bone comb; a wooden spindle of string and the much decayed remnants of five documents (one a lease of a tenement in Sherborne by the Knoyle family dated 21st Henry VIII, ie.1531) (a collection)

Provenance: These items were all found behind a lathe and plaster wall between the Gatehouse Anteroom and the upper part of the Red Room when the area was treated for dry rot in 1978. The conclusion is that they were hidden, on purpose, for "good luck" when the house was built circa 1550.
