PIONEER TRANSATLANTIC STEAM SHIP - SS SIRIUS RETURN MAIDEN VOYAGE AND MID OCEAN TRANSFER OF MAILS FROM HMS TYRIAN: 22 April 1838 EL Halifax NS (weak cds on front) to London endorsed pr H.M Packet Tyrian which sailed 26 April arriving Falmouth 21 May 1838. SS Sirius sailed New York 1 May 1838 on her return maiden voyage and on 15 May Sirius amazingly came across Tyrian becalmed 700 miles west of the Isles of Scilly. It was agreed to transfer the Tyrian mails and Sirius proceeded to Falmouth arriving 19 May where the mails were landed and forwarded to London arriving 21 May 1838 (cds on reverse). (Note this letter was then forwarded at a later date to Madeira By the Dart arriving 19 July.) Fine and scarce example of this event. Cross Reference: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
