The 'Benin Bronzes' are a group of sculptures made up of elaborately decorated cast relief plaques, commemorative heads, animal and human figures. From the 1500s onwards they were created in the West African Kingdom of Benin to honour the Oba (king) in Benin City and celebrate their power and success. Many pieces were also commissioned specifically for the ancestral altars of past Obas, Queen Mothers and to validate the accession of a new Oba.
