British School, 19th Century - Portrait of William Brown, wearing a black suit and a black cravat, circa 1840 - Oil on canvas - 75 x 62cm - 97 x 84.5cm - William Brown was the great-great-grandfather of Aubrey Brown (d. 1935), who in 1919 opened his first silk tie store and in 1926 founded Holliday & Brown. The company recently joined the stable of Mantero alongside Prada and is now based at Lake Como - The canvas bears the stamp of the London colourman Waring & Dimes, active between 1839 and 1842 - Provenance: By descent in the sitter's family
