The XJ-S was launched in September 1975. The development of the car had begun in the late 1960s, with an initial shape set by Malcolm Sayer, but after his death in 1970 it was completed by the in-house Jaguar design team. Power came from the Jaguar V12 petrol engine with a choice of a manual or automatic transmission, but the manual was soon dropped as they were left over from V12 E Type production. The specifications of the XJ-S compared well with other performance cars, it was able to accelerate to 60 mph 7.6 seconds (automatic) and had a top speed of 143 mph. The first series of XJ-S cars had a Borg-Warner Model 12 transmission, but in 1977 GM Turbo-Hydramatic 400 transmissions were fitted. The TH400 transmission was an all-aluminium alloy case with an integrated non-detachable bell-housing. The XJ-S was originally supplied with Dunlop SP Super E205/70VR tyres on 15 × 6K alloy wheels; British police upgraded their Jaguars to a higher-performing 205/70VR15 Michelin XWX.
Jaguar did seize promotional opportunities with the television series The New Avengers and Return of the Saint. The New Avengers featured Mike Gambit (Gareth Hunt) who drove an XJ-S. Return of the Saint saw Simon Templar (played by Ian Ogilvy) driving an early XJ-S with the number plate "ST 1". Miniature toy versions were made by Corgi and proved popular.
The vendor bought this Jaguar XJS Coupe in January 2006 which had five former keepers. According to the previous owner, the car was not used for a long period of time. The owner passed away, and the family members wanted the car to be sold. He assured the vendor that the mileage on the clock is genuine. The car was not running and the car was transported to the engineers for re-commissioning where they first had to replace the petrol tank, because the residue fuel was jelly inside. A photograph of the dashboard was taken on 25th of March 2006 and the clock shows 43,843 miles, which the vendor is convinced is genuine.
This Jaguar XJ-S has no modifications. According to Jaguar only 357 of this specific type were manufactured. The Jaguar XJ-S is hailed as the World’s greatest GT car of the time. Even today the Jaguar impresses with its beauty - those flying buttresses add elegance and the styling and appears timeless. There is space in the boot for golf clubs and Champagne baskets, but space for more than two people is tricky, although it has back seats. The ride of this Coupé is described as comfortable and effortless. The vendor has owned the car since January 2006 . A full restoration was completed through six years with documented photographs and the car is said to be in good running order. The car still has its original Kent alloy wheels. The mileage at purchase was 43,843 with the current mileage being 48,328.
