A pair of medals for the Crimean War to the 1st battalion the Royal Regiment, consisting of: Queen’s Crimea Medal with clasp ‘SEBASTOPOL’ named to: Pte J Bartholomew 1st Bn 1st Regt (engraved naming in Hunt & Roskill style but with last few characters obscured by contact wear) and Turkish Crimea Medal (British obverse), double ring suspension, named to 3889 James Bartholomew Royal Regiment. Regimental depot style impressed naming.
Heavy contact marking on the left side of the Queens Crimea Medal indicates that these medals were worn frequently by the recipient with the reverse of the medal to the front, as was common with this medal because of the striking and impressive image of a Roman warrior being crowned by the figure of Victory, with ‘CRIMEA’ in the left field, which inspired particular pride in the recipient.
‘The First’ or ‘Royal Regiment of Foot’ was the oldest and most senior regiment of the line in the British Army. It was raised in 1633 during the reign of Charles I for service in the Thirty Years War and became The Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) in 1881. Only Good Fine (GF) condition due to contact marking and wear.
