Clare WHITE (1903-1997) Ruins, Taormina Sicily Watercolour, signed, 36 x 49cm. St Ives artist Clare White took great pleasure in traveling independently and painted wherever she went. She was never in a rush and set up her easel to paint 'en plein air' in places which gave her an interesting perspective on a beautiful landscape or classic piece of architecture. This little corner of the ancient Greek ruins at Taormina in Sicily lies apart from the tourist hubbub, where local women collect herbs. This piece is an excellent example of Clare's quiet observational quality, distinctive style and bold use of watercolour.
