AN IRISH 18TH CENTURY – CORK – SILVER SAUCE BOAT BY GEORGE HODDER, the boat has a scalloped edge and a beautifully formed floating double scroll handle; with a leaf detail draped across the top. Sitting on a tripod leg with shell knee and pad foot. The maker’s mark of GH is stamped twice to the underside, though rubbed. Dimensions: 16 x 9 x 9cm (D x W x H). Weight: 158grams
More About the Maker: George Hodder was a member of a prominent family in Cork City. The Hodder’s were landowners and held important positions such as High Sheriff, Alderman and so on. George himself was a well-known silversmith, first mentioned in 1738, and became a Freeman of the Society of Goldsmiths in 1746. In 1754 he was appointed Lord Mayor of Cork. To this day his pieces are highly sought after by collectors and some of his pieces are held in the Fitzgerald Park Museum.
