£300
A Hetchins Cycles (Tottenham) handmade Racing Bicycle, dating 1937, (Jeff Scherens copy) with a 23-inch frame finished in light blue enamel, and features: drop-handlebars, Shimano gear lever with 1 x 5 gear range, Weinmann brakes (Tyre 730), 26-inch wheels and Vee Rubber white-wall tyres, quick release front wheel, and a Brooks B17 Narrow saddle.
After Jef Scherens won the 1936 World Sprint, the vendor’s father had an exact copy of Scherens’ bicycle made for the princely sum of £17-16s and took delivery of it in 1937. It had a fixed 26-inch wheel, short wheelbase, a Brooks saddle and drop bars.
In 1963 the bicycle was given to the vendor on his 16th birthday. By the 1980’s the bicycle was looking tired, and the chrome was faded. The vendor had the frame professionally enamelled, and the fixed wheel replaced with a simple gear system. The bicycle has not been used for over 15 years.
Joseph "Jef" Scherens (17 February 1909 – 9 August 1986), better known as Poeske Scherens, was a Belgian professional track cyclist specializing in sprint where he won seven World Championships. Between 1931 and 1947, he won the Belgian individual sprit championship 15 times.
