A large and free standing tribal mask from the Amazon Basin (probably Brazilian) made from Balsa wood. Late 19th or early 20th Century. Height:
100cm.
Balsa is a fast growing tropical tree, noted for its extremely lightweight and
light-coloured wood. It can be found from S. Mexico to Bolivia and it was –
and still is – extensively used for dugout canoe making.
