A pair of medals for the South African War to the 12 th Royal Lancers, consisting of the Queen’s South Africa Medal with 4 clasps: Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg,
Driefontein and Transvaal, named to: 4432 Pte G Cocks 12 R Lancers (1st type QSA but no ghost dates visible on reverse) and King’s South Africa Medal with 2 clasps named to: 4432 Cpl G N Cocks 12th Lancers. The 12th Royal Lancers formed part of the Cavalry Division in South Africa under Major General Sir John French (who later became CinC of the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1914) which relieved Kimberley on 15 February 1900 by means of a classic and brilliant cavalry flanking action. George Needham Cocks; born Hulme, Manchester 1877, died Tameside
Manchester 17 April 1933. Cpl Cocks appears to have transferred to the 5th Lancers after the South African war and was still serving with them at York at the time of his marriage in 1909. Some contact marking and edge bruising – but these medals were worn by a cavalryman - so Good Fine (GF) condition. With copies of extracts of medal rolls confirming entitlement to clasps.
