OIL ON CANVAS, PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN IN GEORGIAN COSTUME, APPROX. 57 X 69 cm additional information: According to a letter from Birmingham Art Gallery, dated 9 Feb. 1989, 'the artist is probably Richard Wilson who appears as a portrait painter listed in the Birmingham directories at the end of the 18th century', not to be confused with Richard Wilson RA (1714-82), the distinguished landscape painter. The sitter is thought to be John Brown of Birmingham, possibly a local businessman.
