PIETER NEEFS II (Dutch, 1620-1675)
Interior of the Great Church at Hoadem, oil on copper panel, unsigned, 18cm x 24cm. See illustration
No signature seen
There is some scratches to the oil where it has rubbed against the frame
There are some small areas of overpainting-touch-ups, rather than large areas
Paint loss to cloak of gentleman group lower mid foreground
The figures are well painted but two of them are 'see-through' - furthest left, kneeling - (steps can be seen through skirts)
and bigger to foreground - (through his legs).
Provenance - lots 405 & 406 are both from the same estate of an elderly lady who lived in Sheffield. We first saw the paintings last year since when she has passed away. Her estate included a painting by John Thomas Serres and other fine items, retained by the family.
