von Sandrart was primarily known as an art dealer and portrait painter, but he also published a number of maps. This map is based on de Wit's map of c1670. However, what makes this map notable is that it is one of two maps engraved by Johann Baptist Homann before 1700 (the other is a map of the Americas). In 1702, Homann established one of the most important German map publishing firms of the eighteenth century.
