A FLIGHT'S LIMITED HAT BOX NAMED TO LT COL THWAYTES. A dome topped Japanned hat box by Flights Ltd. Military Tailors. Painted in white 'H.D. Thwaytes, The Dorsetshire Regiment', with partial paper labels giving Thwaytes' address as 35 Clarence Parade, Southsea, with two printed fabric labels with the same details. Lt Col. Thwaytes DSO and Bar, had a long and successful career with the Regiment, a 2nd Lt with the 4th Bn from 1907 he rose through the ranks steadily. Wounded with a gun shot to the hand and side during the fighting for Hill 60 on the 20th of April 1915, he went on to command the 1st Battalion on a number of occasions, he is quoted extensively in the History of the Regiment. His D.S.O. was awarded for gallantry and ability during the attack on Damery and Parvilliers, 11.8.18, the bar for service whilst commanding the 1st Btn on 4.11.18 when a successful crossing of the Sambre Canal at Ors was achieved.
