Rowlandson and Pugin - Queen’s Palace, St James’s Park 1808..
This hand-coloured aquatint of the Queen’s Palace, St James’s Park is by Thomas Rowlandson and Augustus Charles Pugin, dated 1808. This aquatint engraving is from The Microcosm of London, published by R Ackermann, 101 Strand, London 1808. Printed by T Bensley, Fleet St. London.
The architectural settings were eloquently and accurately rendered by Augustus Pugin whereas the human activity was depicted by Thomas Rowlandson. Although Rowlandson is known for humor and satire, the prints in The Microcosm of London are more documentary, though his eye for telling detail and his ability to convey lively activity is quite evident.
The aquatint engravers were Joseph Constantine Stadler, Thomas Sutherland, J. Hill, John Bluck and Harraden
