Rare pair of antique William IV period rosewood X framed library arm chairs. After a design by Loudon, the legs terminating with square brass capped castors. Upholstered in studded aged green leather, strap held head rest cushions. Purchased Martyn Cook Antiques, 2007 $38,000
The design is a slightly richer treatment of plate 1911 of John Claudius Loudon's Encyclopaedia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture, published in London in 1833. The drawing is reproduced in E. Joy (ed.), Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th century Furniture Design, London, 1977, p.157. The model was made in England and Northern Europe (2)
