Dominic Serres RA (France, 1719 - London, 1793) A portfolio of maritime sketches of Royal Navy war vessels, including the Temeraire, the Britannia, the Centurion, the Royal George, Antelope, the Marlborough, the Royal Indiaman, and others; a group of fourteen three signed DSerres pen, ink and wash drawings on paper various sizes, the larger examples approximately 23 x 47, 30 x 38cm and 18 x 63cm (14) Provenance: By family repute, the Collection of Robert Cole (1769-1867), solicitor, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and art collector. Thence by family descent. French-born maritime painter Serres led an adventurous life, leaving his strict French schooling to travel to Spain on foot, where he boarded a ship to the New World. There he became master of a trading vessel in Havana, Cuba, before being captured by the British and imprisoned in England for a time. Following his imprisonment Serres settled in London and gained success as a painter of naval battles for captains and commanders. In 1773 he completed his first commission for King George III. Later, the monarch appointed Serres master painter. Serres' works are in the collection of the National Maritime Museum.
