Francis Garnett Atkinson was born on the 10th of November 1857 in Great Ouseburn, North Yorkshire, the son of Thomas Atkinson, who was the Vicar of the village and Henrietta Jane Atkinson.
He was educated at Great Ealing School, and upon leaving at age 18, he was commissioned as Lieutenant into the Royal Marine Light Infantry. On the 21st of August 1880, he was transferred to the 13th Bengal Lancers, Indian Army. This was made permanent under the Royal Warrant passed on the 17th of January, 1881.
On the 10th of December, 1883, he married Eliza Augusta Snow Prestage. The daughter of Franklin Prestage, a railway engineer who proposed the construction of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The couple would go on to have sons George Prestage Atkinson (1885 to 1929) and Eric Garnett Atkinson, whose medals are for sale in this auction.
During the Egyptian Campaign, he was with the 13th Bengal Lancers at Tel - El - Kebir and Kasassin. Promoted to Captain on the 15th of September 1887 and Major on the 2nd of September 1896.
Atkinson served with the 13th on the Punjab Frontier from 1897 to 1898 and was awarded the Indian General Service Medal. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on the 20th of May 1898 and full Colonel on the 10th of February 1904.
He was made a C.B. in the Kings' Birthday honours in 1908, at which time he held the rank of Brigadier General. On the 1st of September 1914, he retired after thirty-four years of service.
Francis Garnett Atkinson passed away on the 25th of July 1941 in the family home at Northallerton, North Yorkshire; his wife had died a few months earlier.
