1951 BSA B31, 350 cc. Registration number Unregistered. Frame number ZB31 16316. Engine number ZB31 18477. BSA's rugged, workaday B31 was manufactured from 1945 to the end of 1959, its overhead-valve engine providing the basis for the renowned Gold Star sports roadster. At the time of its introduction, the B31 was BSA's sole all-new model, joining the lightweight 'C' and heavyweight 'M' ranges carried over from pre-war days. Produced initially with rigid frame and telescopic front fork, the B31 gained (optional) plunger rear suspension in 1949 and an all-new swinging-arm frame in 1954. A good all-round performer by the standards of its time, the B31 could cruise comfortably all day at 60mph while returning 75-plus miles per gallon, virtues that endeared it to private owners and police forces alike. Our example here was dispatched from the factory on the 3rd January 1951 to L. Robinson & Son of Hawick in the Scottish borders. Nothing is known of its life there but in 2000/01 Mr Burton of Hawick undertook a comprehensive rebuild, costing in the region of £7,000; the engine was totally overhauled by SRM Engineering of Aberystwyth, many components zinc plated or rechromed and the frame repainted and the magdyno overhauled. Basically unused since it will need a little recommissioning before taking on the road or just enjoy this wonderful restoration in your home. Sold with the BSA dating certificate and a large quantity of receipts for the work undertaken.
