More Information

Paris: P du Val, (1664) 1664

Copperplate engraving, centerfold, paper watermarked, damp mark along top margin, ink number â??84â?? at top center, tanning along outer bottom edge with frittering, some foxing spots; bottom off center: Somer sculp; verso: blank, paint show through, name and number in ink

from Cartes de geographie

41 by 54cm

This map was based on Sansonâ??s 1650 map, but Du Val added a number of place names. This is particularly apparent in the Cape, which reflects the changing commercial importance of the area at this time. The newly added names include Tafel Bay, I da Fera, B. de Saldagne, C. Falso, C. de Infante, and Beauport on the east coast. In the upper cartouche is a simple key for royal kingdom, bishopric, seaport, cape, island, port and river.
