ANDROMEDA LOG BOOK, 1825-1826

by R. Mumford, including the homeward bound passage from New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land and completing a voyage round the World, 64 leaves, 8 December 1825 - 9 July 1826, the voyage begins at Hobart where he remained until 20 February 1826 leading a highly social life. Then passing Sydney and New Zealand where he had many problems with icebergs. Then past Cape Horn and the Falkland Islands (5 April), and near Trinidad (5 May). On 22 May he saw a pirate ship which he thought was a slaver and between 1 and 12 June he saw two American ships, the latter supplying the Andromeda with candied and fresh fruit. On 21 June he passed by the Azores and on 1 July sailed passed the Scilly Isles and Mount St. Michael. Carrying on through the Channel he eventually docked at Dover where he travelled to Canterbury (very impressed!) and London remarking that he had been twenty weeks at sea. The log is full of descriptions of birds, fish, whales, and porpoises, many of which were eaten, in 2 parts, unbound -- 12½ x 8in. (31.75 x 20.3cm.)
