BARTOLI, Pietro Santi and Giovanni Pietro Bellori. Colonna Traiana eretta dal Senato e Popolo Romano, unkown edition, no title page, letterpress text description of Alfonso Chacón or index, 2 single page and 132 double page plates, full speckled calf, gilt spine in compartments titled PRINTS, folio An edition of Bartoli's engraved masterpiece, based on his own drawings of Trajan's column. Bartoli was able to inspect the column up close in the 1660s when King Louis XIV of France commissioned the erection of scaffolding in order to make a cast of the whole frieze (the first edition was dedicated to Louis). The publication was an immediate success and later editions were produced throughout the 18th and early 19th century. The present copy appears to be on unwatermarked paper suggesting a later edition.
