Desmond Harmsworth (1903-1990) British. "Havelock Ellis" (Physician, 1859-1939), Charcoal, Signed in Pencil, and Inscribed on a label verso, 13.25" x 9.5" (33.6 x 24.2cm). Provenance: Berkeley Square Gallery, London. Notes: Henry Havelock Ellis (1859-1939) was a progressive psychologist known for challenging Victorian taboos on sexuality with his writings on homosexuality, sexual inversion and sexual impulses. The fact that, until the age of sixty, Ellis was himself reportedly impotent made him a rather unlikely authority on the topic but did nothing to deter his enthusiasm for it. His writings on the effects of psychedelic drugs, on the other hand, were backed up by first-hand experience, for he gamely conducted his experiments with the hallucinogenic drug mescaline on himself.
