An early 18th century mahogany and marquetry shaped rectangular table box, hinged cover with stuffed-over upholstery, enclosing a divided interior, the side inlaid in bone and ebony with playing card suits, crosses and eight-pointed stars, 29.5cm wide, c.1720

Provenance: Inscribed to verso of cover Bought at Abbeville, Aug 1917; silk covering procured at same time, Gordon Home

Although one must be wary of the temptation to indulge in conjecture, the English Artist Gordon Cochrane Home (1878 - 1969) was in France at points during 1914 and 1920 while serving as a Major in the Royal Army Service Corps.
