Kuniyoshi Utagawa, Kisokaido, Ghost Print, Buddhism, Ukiyo-eAnnaka - Seigen the monk praying to Fud, sees a vision of his beloved Sakura-hime from the series Sixty-nine Post Stations of the Kisokaid Road. Original Japanese Woodblock Print.
Publisher: Kaga-ya Yasubei
Date: 1852
Dimensions: 24.3 x 36 cm
Princess Sakura had come to the monk Seigen to be ordained a nun. She was born with a handicap, with her hand in a fist. Seigen managed to cure her hand and as soon as she opened her fist, a small incense box fell out. This same incense case had been given as a gift from Seigen to his former male lover, Shiragiku, who had committed suicide seventeen years ago. Seigen immediately believed Sakura to be the reincarnation of Shiragiku.
In this print, Seigen's hermitage is dirty and decrepit, with broken boards and cobwebs. He is unkempt, his formerly shaven head grown out into a crown of wild, bushy hair. The altar that he kneels before contains an image of Fudo Myo-o, one of the fierce guardian deities who protect the Buddhist faith, but the praying Seigen can see only his personal vision of Sakura-hime.
Binding holes along right margin. Minor wormholes on top left corner. Some pinholes. Red pigment oxidised slightly.
