£140 - £200
SAMPLE POST UNDERPAID PACKET WITH 2d BLUES(3) & "2s/2d" CHARGE MADE UP OF UPP(?) H.S. MARKS; 15 July 1878 part large wrapper (understandable creasing and wear but very attractive) endorsed "Sample Post" back and front and addressed to Manchester; franked with 2d Blue strip of three (pl.15) tied by fair "CARNARVON" duplexes, but endorsed "Over 18ozs" with initials and having a cleverly constructed 2s-2d Postage Due mark (1s-1d deficiency, doubled) beside the partial boxed Manchester "[More to p]ay/above [18] oz/498" mark. The "2s/2d" charge was composed of two separate very fine strikes of the distinctive handstruck "2" of Manchester (not recorded?) that have been applied either side of a manuscript slash with "s" and "d" written above each "2"! One of the heaviest QV underpaid covers that we can recall having seen. It should have had nine 2d Blues and a 1d red! Unique?! [Ex Robert Johnson, Cavendish June 2006; lot 1230, realised £320+BP.] [Illustrated in BPPP, p.503.] Cross Reference: 1858-69 2d PLATES, WELSH POSTAL HISTORY, POSTAGE DUE MARKS, UNIFORM 1d POSTAGE PERIOD
