George Williams (1920-1985) Abstract in blue, signed and dated 70 lower right, oil on paper, 40.5cm x 40.5cm, frame 62.4cm x 62.4cm George Williams was a British abstract artist from Bristol. He served in the RAF in Egypt and North Africa between 1939-1946. Upon his release from the Air Force he was an artistic advisor to Bristol City Council for reconstructing the centre following extensive war damage. During this period he further developed himself as an artist; becoming a member of the Free Painters Group in London during the 1950s. His main influences were Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinksy and Piet Mondriaan. In 1960 Williams relocated to Switzerland to lecture in Art History and became a lifelong friend to artist Mark Tobey (1890-1976), his work is predominantly abstract in nature and he exhibited widely throughout Switzerland between 1960-1985.
