Debut studied under David d'Angers and was the father of Marcel Debut. He won the Prix de Rome in 1851 and exhibited numerous times at the Salon from 1848 until his death. The present bronze exemplifies the fascination with the Middle East that prevailed during the second half of the 19th century in Paris.
