GLUCK (1895-1976) A Handwritten Letter from the Artist The letter is on 'The Chantry House, Steyning, Sussex. Steyning 3163' paper. In 1944, Gluck took residence at Chantry House, Steyning with partner Edith Shackleton Heald, the two lived at the property until Heald's death in 1976. This period was a relatively quiet time for Gluck's painting career, with efforts largely taken up by a campaign for the British Standards Institution to improve the quality of the paints available at the time. During this time, the two acquired their second residence, in the village of Lamorna at Dolphin Cottage. The letter addressed to 'My Dear', speaks of Gluck's personal life with Heald surrounding the Christmas of 1960 and recalls a meeting at the British Standards Institution in October of the same year.
